Summer Comfort Foods
Summer is a good time for comfort foods. Childhood memories of
hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, corn on the cob, potato salad, and watermelon
in the backyard picnic come to the minds of many. How about hand churned ice cream?
Family recipes abound of summer
specialties. Grandpa Anderson still cooks ribs on the grill.
Images of picnics are often associated with summer time comfort foods.
The Andersons had four generations of families gather every year to celebrate
fourth of July in Sunnyvale. Great grandpa Joe and great grandma Sue provided baby
back ribs. They used a rub that is supposedly a family secret recipe. It was so
well-guarded that it is documented only in the family will.
The family secret recipe for the baby back rib barbeque (or BBQ as
youngest Anderson kids say) is prepared only by Joe and Sue. Their three children
do not even know what goes into the rub. Rumor has it that sun dried tomatoes
(grown in their own garden) is powder ground and is added to the recipe. The cloves
of garlic and chopped sweet onions are added to the mix at the very end. The meat
is marinated overnight or longer before the ribs hit the hot grill.
